Credit market shocks and economic fluctuations: Evidence from corporate bond and stock markets ¬リニ

چکیده
To identify disruptions in credit markets, research on the role of asset prices in economic fluctuations has focused on the information content of various corporate credit spreads. We re-examine this evidence using a broad array of credit spreads constructed directly from the secondary bond prices on outstanding senior unsecured debt issued by a large panel of nonfinancial firms. An advantage of our “ground-up” approach is that we are able to construct matched portfolios of equity returns, which allows us to examine the information content of bond spreads that is orthogonal to the information contained in stock prices of the same set of firms, as well as in macroeconomic variables measuring economic activity, inflation, interest rates, and other financial indicators. Our portfolio-based bond spreads contain substantial predictive power for economic activity and outperform—especially at longer horizons—standard default-risk indicators. Much of the predictive power of bond spreads for economic activity is embedded in securities issued by intermediate-risk rather than high-risk firms. According to impulse responses from a structural factor-augmented vector autoregression, unexpected increases in bond spreads cause large and persistent contractions in economic activity. Indeed, shocks emanating from the corporate bond market account for more than 20 percent of the forecast error variance in economic activity at the twoto four-year horizon. Overall, our results imply that credit market shocks have contributed significantly to U.S. economic fluctuations during the 1990–2007 period. JEL Classification: E32, E44, G12

The Spill-Over Impact of Liquidity Shocks in the Commercial Real Estate Market∗
Considerable anecdotal evidence suggests that the effects of liquidity shocks spread quickly throughout the financial sector. However, few studies have focused on the dynamics of liquidity across real-estate markets. This paper examines the liquidity spill-over impact across four markets linked by a common fundamental factor : the stock market, the derivative (Credit Default Swap (CDS)) market,...
متن کاملStock Market Interactions between the BRICS and the United States: Evidence from Asymmetric Granger Causality Tests in the Frequency Domain
The interaction of BRICS stock markets with the United States is studied using an asymmetric Granger causality test based on the frequency domain. This type of analysis allows for both positive and negative shocks over different horizons. There is a clear bivariate causality that runs both ways between the United States stock market and the respective BRICS markets. In addition, both negative a...
متن کاملA Dynamic Model for Emerging Debt Markets: The Case of Hong Kong Corporate Credit Risk
Following the rationale of the KMV model, this study builds an empirical model to price corporate credit risk for listed corporations in Hong Kong. To mitigate the bias from accounting data, the model totally relies on market-based information, such as equity value, stock market index, implied volatility of market index, riskfree rate and maturity. This fits in the reality of emerging credit ma...
متن کاملEquilibrium Credit Spreads and the Macroeconomy
Credit markets play an important role in the macroeconomy and credit market data is often used to predict both future macroeconomic and stock market performance. In this paper we propose a tractable general equilibrium asset pricing model with heterogeneous firms that links movements in stock and bond markets to macroeconomic activity. The model suggests that movements in risk premia in corpora...
متن کاملCredit lines as monitored liquidity insurance: Theory and evidence ¬リニ
We propose a theory of credit lines provided by banks to firms as a form of monitored liquidity insurance. Bank monitoring and resulting revocations help control illiquidityseeking behavior of firms insured by credit lines. The cost of credit lines is thus greater for firms with high liquidity risk, which in turn are likely to use cash instead of credit lines. We test this implication for corpo...
